The Red Fang - Book Review

One day I was poring over FaceBook posts and came across Nicola Matthews asking if anyone would read and review her book The Red Fang.  I read the blurb, Vampire, Super Natural.  HELL YEAH!  I sent her a PM and crossed my fingers that she would respond.  Low and behold, she did.  And thus started a beautiful book relationship.

Eight years ago a half-fey named Ethereal Oscurita found refuge in the city of Shadow Cove, taken in by the Master Vampire known as Requiem. Now the life she has worked so hard to build will come under attack by the very species that she calls her own. Now her life, as well as the lives of her supernatural family, hangs in the balance as the vampires and wereanimals of Shadow Cove must unite against the organization known only as SHiELD. Will their union be enough to drive SHiELD back underground, or is this the beginning of the end for all supernatural creatures across the globe?

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead. Take a bite outta life.
WARNING: graphic violence

4 Stars

Requiem is the Master Vampire of the city, Shadow Cove. His ‘family’ and all the other super naturals around the area are being hunted by the SHEiLD. One by one they are being picked off. When the SHEiLD comes knocking at Requiem’s door, he doesn’t just answer, he explodes along with what is left of the super naturals. Ethereal, a half fey belongs to Requiem’s family, but she is willing to give it her all to protect her family.

But will this tear Requiem’s family apart at the seams leaving them all dead? Or will they triumph over the SHEiLD? Who sent them and what do they want?

This is a fast paced read that has you hanging on the edge. At the beginning you are drawn in by the characters and their personalities. How they all interact. The vamps are always so proper with their manners, the wolves, dogs all of them. But they are each their own, which is great. Ethereal is the only half fey in existence, not something she carries lightly. She knows the sacrifice her parents made for her and the sacrifice Requiem made for her too. She’s a smart cookie. A lonely, smart cookie.

There is love, hot sex, and fighting in this book. All the right stuff for a paranormal book.

Cardboard - YA Graphic Novel

I've never read a Graphic Novel before and frankly I wasn't sure what I was getting into.  A week ago I was lucky enough to attend a YA birthday party.  The boy in question is now a very mature 8.  He loves to read, so what better gift then books!!  Barnes & Noble here I come.  But before I went I did some research.  I knew he love The Magic Tree House series, but has all the books, Hardy boys, has those too.  Then I ran across Graphic Novels and thought HEY!  What the hell!

Thus my plunge into the Graphic Novel arena.  I'm so excited!  Anyhow, birthday boy read the book in two days and gave it to me.  I read all 238 pages last night and really loved it!

When cardboard creatures come magically to life, a boy must save his town from disaster.

Cam's down-and-out father gives him a cardboard box for his birthday and he knows it's the worst present ever. So to make the best of a bad situation, they bend the cardboard into a man-and to their astonishment, it comes magically to life. But the neighborhood bully, Marcus, warps the powerful cardboard into his own evil creations that threaten to destroy them all!

Dad is down out and out, thanks to the sucky economy(We can all relate), but it's son, Cam's birthday and he can't go home empty handed. He runs across a man selling odd gifts. The man gives him a card board box with 2 rules; Give the scraps back and ask for no more cardboard.

At home the neighborhood bully, Marcus pokes fun of the empty box Dad brought home. No one, not even Cam or Dad are prepared for what the cardboard box holds. Marcus plays up the victim card and steals some cardboard to create his own minions that reek havoc over the neighborhood. Can it be stopped in time? Can the cardboard be contained?

The illustrations are amazing. They pop right out of the book and come to life. The writing is great too, the story sucks you in and you start to look at things differently. You use your imagination too. Which is way cool!!   And like every good YA book there is a moral message.

I'd recommend this book for any kid, boy or girl, from 8+ who likes to read. Yes, it does have some dark parts when the cardboard goes to war, but nothing major.

Sweetness, he said...

She turned back up the trail, and pushed herself to go forward. The next few strides hurt less than the first. She picked up her pace, and squinted into the last of the sunlight, as her heart pounded in her chest.
She took deep breaths as she pushed herself harder, confident that she was gaining ground, and when she reached a clearing by the lake, she looked back.
It was a man, or what looked like one, but his face was white. And red.

Storm - Book Review

Somewhere on FaceBook I saw a post on this book asking if anyone had read it yet.  I clicked the link, like a good little follower that I am, read the blurb and immediately one clicked the buy button.  Shhh, you know you do it too!!  Can I just say, I'm glad I did.  I finished this book in one day, yes 1 day.  I couldn't put it down.  I was hooked, like a junkie and I loved it.   Look at the sexy beast on the cover of this book, that alone should make your panties drop!

On that note, I will say the sex in this book is near the 75% mark, but the foreplay building up to the sex is worth it.

The calm before the storm…

I lived in the quiet stillness.
I felt the wind rustle, warning me, telling me to get out of its path.

But I didn’t.
I never stood a chance.

A series of weather and road mishaps leaves me trapped in the middle of a blizzard with a complete stranger. In the back of a pickup truck. For forty-eight freakin’ hours.

A stranger with long hair, tattoos, and rippling with muscle.

A stranger with an insanely sexy voice and a wicked smile that turned my insides to jelly.

A stranger who held me in his arms, calmed me, and then set a fire in me that I couldn’t put out.

Storm lives up to his name. Beautiful. Dangerously inviting. Tumultuous. Dark. A clash of hot and cold.

He’s used to getting everything he wants.

And now he wants me.

Some people chase storms for the beautiful thrill. What happens when the storm chases you?

4.5 Stars

Evelyn is traveling for work, a snow storm is brewing and next thing she knows her car is sliding off the road and down over a bank.  Luckily for her the local Sasquatch is friendly and offers to give her a lift.  The Sasquatch in question turns out to be a man named Storm.  A twist of fate sends his truck into a tail spin and his truck is now crashed.  Two for two.   YIKES!  While they wait for help, the talk, they listen and they learn about each other.

You soon realize that Evelyn can be childish, if not rude.  But I get it, she is just protecting herself She has too, it's not like anyone else is looking out after her.  As the storm dies down, they catch a ride to Storms 'cabin'.  The thermostat isn't the only thing that turns up at the cabin.  Days pass, but Storm can't get Evelyn out of his mind.  He calls, texts, drops by to see her, knowing full well that she has a boyfriend, Mike.  Who is a dick.

Can a romance between Storm and Evelyn work out?  Can she take the final step and just go with it?  See where life takes you?  Or will she stay safe and not risk her heart to Storm?  They both have a lot to lose.

Like I said before Evelyn was a little standoffish at the beginning, but after reading more about her, I understood.  Storm could be a dick too, but he had his reasons.  Reason's that Evelyn didn't know at the time.  They were both protecting themselves from being hurt.

Ms. Cole wrote a spectacular book, with characters that are flawed and have hang ups and passion just like us.  I really could connect and feel Evelyn's pain in her current relationship with Michael.  It was tangible and horrible, but I get why she stayed.  I do.  Was it the right reason to stay?  No, but Evelyn figured it out when she listened to her heart instead of her brain.  Jump Evelyn, jump.  Storm is there to catch you.

Broken - Excerpt

Title: The Only Exception: Broken
Author: A.L. Davis
Genre: Romance
Release Date: Dec 13, 2014

“Everyone I’ve ever loved has been taken from me and I can’t take the heartache anymore. It’s time to build that wall around my heart and let no one in, no exceptions.”

Ellie never did know her mother; before she turned twenty she lost her father in the line of duty; a freak accident stole her fiancĂ© from her before they had a chance to start their life together. She wants answers, but now that she’s living in a new town and trying to start over, she’s finding that it’s not that easy. Maybe new surroundings are what she needs to make it easier to move on and forget all about her old life. It could have been…until he showed up.

“Having the sort of job that is as dangerous as what I do doesn’t allow for a personal life, no exceptions.”

Jack and his team of military misfits have seen their fair share of war zones and violent criminals. Skilled in precision rescue operations, they’ve traveled into some of the most terrifying countries and stood up to intimidating adversaries, but when a mentor of Jack’s calls them in for a favor that he is unable to turn down, he finds himself up against his most challenging fear of all…his heart. There is a fine line between getting close enough to do your job and getting so close that you get attached. That line used to be obvious, but now that he’s met her, things have blurred and priorities have shifted. Can he keep his feelings in check and still protect Ellie from an adversary more dangerous and twisted than she could ever imagine?

“And this…” I tossed the manila envelope back to the desk, “…is not a job. It’s a death sentence. My death sentence. I’m walking in blind. I mean, how do I know she’s not running from the law?”

Lou shook his head, his mouth contorting into a tight frown, and answered matter-of-factly, “She’s not. And why would that stop you?”

“How do I know for sure? How do you know for sure?” I challenged, making him smile.

Somehow, that irritated me even more. He was hiding something.

“Because I know,” he answered, lips pursed, eyes narrowing at me. He didn’t look away and neither did I. I wanted to know what he was thinking. What was he hiding? Unfortunately, he was going to make it difficult to find out.

I sighed, knowing that was the only answer I was going to get. “Is she hiding from her husband or boyfriend or something?”

“Most definitely not,” he answered with a heavy sigh, sadness flicking across his face.

This piqued my interest. And why was a small part of me so damn happy with that answer?

“Did she kill someone?” I figured I already knew the answer to this one, but I had to ask.

He chuckled. “Absolutely not.”

“What if she’s got the mob after her? Did she piss off a terrorist group?”

“So what if they are? So what if she did? You’ve been wrapped up in worse and handled it,” he answered quickly. “Stop with the stalling already, Jack. I need to know. Are. You. In.”

“Lou, I don’t help people against their will because if they won’t listen and do what I tell them to do, bad things happen. She doesn’t want me anywhere near her. She won’t even look at me, let alone talk to me. Ellie dodges me all day long. I tried to just talk to her like you asked me, but she avoids me like the plague and scurries off in the other direction. She looks at me like…like…”

“Like the frightened child she is,” Lou interrupted sighing.

A.L. Davis lives in Southern California with her husband, two kids, and one fur baby. A.L. has had a passion for writing since high school where any free time was spent thinking up new stories. Jack Hammer - Book Review

Blaine Wesley
I’m the Jack Hammer. Exotic dancer extraordinaire. The teaser and the pleaser—the paid for penis for play. I have to be all these things to survive. It’s who I became when I lost her. But now she’s back, and I can’t decide who I want to be more. The Jack Hammer or Blaine Wesley. All I know is she’s foreplay at its finest, and it’s my job to get them wet and ready.

Chelsey Ford
Liar. That’s what I called him when he walked out of my life. Losing your first love will turn you into someone bitter. Hateful. Angry. But now he’s back, and he’s determined to torture me. The only problem is, I’m enjoying his form of torture too much. And the hatred for him that holds me together is slowly starting to dissolve.

3 Stars

Here it is in a nut shell, poor boy, Blaine, falls for rich girl, Chelsey. Her family doesn't like it. They sneak out to be together. Then things fall apart due to their immaturity, they are in high school after all. Jump to the present, she is at Columbia and he, well he's working at the golden banana, as a stripper!

Now they are older, more mature right? Nope. Blaine is jealous of all the guys who come @ Chelsey. But rather then tell her, he just keeps dogging her when ever he see's her with another guy. That got old quickly for me and I couldn't figure out why she continued to talk to him.

It was a little too predictable for me. Its not that I didn't like it, I just didn't love it. I was frustrated with Blaine and Chelsey because they couldn't get their shit together and actually talk. If you are screwing each other, you can talk to each other! C'mon!

For me this could have been so much better, but if you are looking for a quick easy read for pool side or near the beach, here it is.
